Alphanumeric pagers were ahead of their time when they were first introduced. 

With today's email technology, Alpha pagers now can receive text messages without using an answering service or data phone.  Each Pager Xpress alpha pager is assigned their own email address (example: 10digit number @ pagerxpress.com). This allows the end user to receive emails from anyone or service. 

Like Numeric Pagers; Alpha pagers can receive numeric pages as well.
